Start with the outcome, not the venue
Bonding, strategy, celebration or recovery? The answer decides everything downstream — a strategy retreat needs breakout rooms and morning focus blocks; a bonding retreat needs shared adventures and long dinners. Venues that are perfect for one fail the other.
Pick the coast by personality
Cancún: easiest logistics, biggest room blocks. Tulum: wow-factor, premium prices, weaker Wi-Fi. Holbox: total disconnection — magical for small forums, wrong for groups over forty. Playa del Carmen: the practical middle.
Build rhythm, not a schedule
The retreats people rave about alternate intensity: one structured morning, one open afternoon, one big shared experience. Temazcal at sunset, a cenote swim, a yacht day — anchor moments, with breathing room between them.
The mistakes we fix most
Booking hotels before flights. Underestimating transfer times (the airport to Tulum is 90+ minutes now). And the classic: planning every hour. Leave space — the best conversations happen by the pool, not in the program.
