Tulum and Holbox are both on the Mexican Caribbean, both beautiful — and completely different trips. Choosing wrong is the most common mistake we see visitors make.
Tulum: design hotels and a scene
Tulum is where you go to be seen a little. World-class restaurants, beach clubs with DJ sets, cenotes between brunch and sunset. It costs more than it used to, and July sargassum can frustrate — but the energy is unmatched.
Holbox: the island that switches you off
No cars, sand streets, hammocks in shallow water. Holbox is where phones go face-down. The whale sharks visit June through September, and the bioluminescence on dark nights is something people describe to us years later.
Our honest answer
Four nights or fewer: pick one, don't split. A week or more: three nights Tulum, then ferry over to Holbox to decompress. We arrange the whole arc — transfers, ferry, golf carts waiting at the dock.
